Restormel Castle, one of the four chief Norman castles of Cornwall, is a rare, perfectly circular shaped keep built in the 11th century near the River Fowey.
Restormel once controlled the main crossing point over the River Fowey during the turbulent years following the Norman invasion. It served predominantly as the central administrative hub of Cornwall. It was not until the English Civil War did it see action when Sir Richard Grenville stormed the castle with a Royalist force in the summer of 1644. The following year it was abandoned when the Royalist cause was lost. It fell into disrepair for several hundred years. In 1984, English Heritage took over its maintenance. It is now a popular place to picnic.
